I love shredded cabbage when served with Manchurian recipes or as a salad with starter recipes. It is also used in preparing raita recipes too.

Cabbage has lots of health benefits as it is full of essential nutrients. Cabbage keeps our heart healthy and is very rich in Vitamin C. Chutney or pickles are very necessary items in Indian meals and you will find these at almost every Indian home. I think just eating chapati and sabji combinations or dal and rice can get boring. In my home, most of the times meals aren’t complete without chutney, salad, raita or pickles.

I often prepare this Cabbage Chutney Recipe as it tastes really good because of the combination of ingredients used in this recipe. It combines all the tastes together – tanginess, spice and sweet which makes this recipe mouth watering. Though it can be served as a side dish with your main course meal but you may also eat it as vegetables, dal or curry with chapatis or rotis.

This recipe is prepared from very simple ingredients which are generally available in our household kitchens. And very likely, you will already have these in your kitchen too, so you won’t have to run miles away to grocery shops or climb trees to get ingredients for this recipe 😉.

Ingredients for Tempering

Cooking method for Cabbage Chutney

  1. Chop cabbage into thin ribbon slices. Finely chop green chilli and coriander.

I love to eat chilies, so I have used about 1 ½ tablespoon of chilies. But you can use less if you don't prefer to eat spicy food.
  2. Now transfer these ingredients to a grinder jar - shredded cabbage, lemon juice, salt, sugar, chat masala, coriander powder and ¼ tsp turmeric powder.

  3. Grind all ingredients until they become smaller in size, it just takes few seconds. Transfer cabbage to a mixing bowl. Now add finely chopped coriander and some green chilies.

Add some finely chopped chilies to cabbage mix and keep some chilies for tempering. I prefer to add it in both the ways because I love to eat raw chilli and when it's added to tempering, chilli's flavour nicely blends into tadka.
  4. Let’s prepare some tempering or tadka now. Heat a small pan, add oil to it. Once oil is hot, add cumin seeds and allow to splutter. Then add green chilies, remaining ¼ tsp turmeric powder, asafoetida and curry leaves. Just allow curry leaves to become crisp.

  5. Now pour tadka (tempering) on cabbage, mix well - and it's ready!
