Chole chaat recipe is a very simple and quick to prepare recipe. Chole chaat or Chana chaat was a random thought to me and it turned out brilliant. So I just thought to share this easy chole chaat recipe with you.

Chole Chaat

This Chana Chaat or Chole Chaat recipe is a healthy snack option as it has a combination of veggies, curd and chickpeas and all of these come with some good amount of nutrition values which is essential for our body and also it’s a good choice if we are bored with our regular meals.

I have used papdi chaat puris to give some crisp texture to this chaat recipe. However, you can avoid adding puri to make this chana chaat a complete oil free recipe. So you don’t have to worry much if you are a fitness lover.

For any recipes if we use chole (chickpeas) then it is a must to soak chickpeas for at least 8 hours. So if you want to use chole anytime for any recipe, plan and just soak it overnight a day before you cook that recipe. The only big task in this recipe is to boil the chickpeas. Other than that everything is about just garnishing and how we make it presentable.

Any chaat recipes will not be tasty without chaat masala or some masala mix. We can use chaat masala or pani puri masala alone in this recipe. But, by addding some other spices, we can get nice masala mix which enhances the taste of this chole chaat recipe or any other chaat recipes.

Preparing Masala Mix for Chole Chaat

To prepare masala mix which can be used for any chaat recipes, mix all these listed ingredients:

  • Cumin powder (¼ tablespoon)
  • Coriander powder (¼ tablespoon)
  • Garam masala (⅛ tablespoon)
  • Red chilli powder (⅛ tablespoon)
  • Chaat masala (¼ tablespoon)
  • Salt (¼ tablespoon or to taste)

The above quantity of spices would suffice for preparing chaat recipes 2 to 3 times for 4 persons. You can adjust the quantity as per your needs and store leftover masala which can be handy whenever you prepare Chaats.

Here is another famous street food or chat recipe if you love to eat chaats – Ragda Patties.

Ingredients for Chole Chaat

Cooking method for Chole Chaat Recipe

  1. Soak chickpeas (or kabuli chana) overnight in enough water.

  2. Drain excess water from chana and wash chana 1 to 2 times with running water.

  3. Transfer chana to pressure cooker and add water and salt to it. Rinse potatoes and place in a steel bowl (katori) inside pressure cooker.

    Chole Chaat
It is a time saving hack to boil both potatoes and chana at the same time. I used 6 baby potatoes as there were no medium / large potatoes left in my kitchen. You may use whatever you have.
  4. Pressure cook chana and potato for 4 whistles. Check afterwards and cook more if required.

  5. Meanwhile when chana is getting cooked, rinse onion, tomato and pomegranate.

Finely chop onion and tomato. Peel off pomegranate and seperate kernels (we just need few tablespoons for garnishing) as shown in ingredients section image.
  6. When potatoes are boiled and cooled down a bit then peel off and cut them into small or medium chunks as required.

Remove excess water if any and allow chana and potatoes to turn to normal temperature or can keep in fridge for it to become little colder .
  7. Now take a large mixing bowl, transfer curd to it. Add salt, sugar and mix well.

  9. Add just little amount of water to adjust the curd to a pouring consistency.

  10. Now curd is nicely prepared for a pouring consistency.

  11. Add chole to a plate and crush the papadi (or crunchy puri) on top of chole.

Divide all ingredients equally for making 3 to 4 servings (as required). I have used papadi (crunchy puri) which is generally used for papadi chat recipe. But, you can also use puris (used for pani puri) instead to give some crunchy texture to Chole chaat recipe.
  12. Now arrange potatoes, tomatoes and onions.

  13. Add a spoonful of curd on the top.

  14. Sprinkle sev, some onion, tomato, potatoes and pomegranate. Drizzle tamarind sweet chutney and green mint chutney. And at last, sprinkle masala mix which we prepared by mixing a few spices powder.

  15. Adding this mix masala really makes this chaat awesome. I prefer to add this masala to most of my chat recipes.
