Moong Dal Halwa

I have heard from most of my north Indian friends that this dessert recipe is kind of a must menu item in North Indian weddings. I can definitely understand why it is a must menu item in the weddings or functions. It's outstanding in taste and I don't think skipping this delicious recipe is a good option honestly. You can have different varieties of sweets for any functions but if you don't have Moong Dal Halwa in the menu list , then you must know that you are missing something good, really.

I had this sweets dessert in one of the Rajasthani restaurants and from then I am in love with this recipe. The colour, texture, richness and everything is fantastic and brilliant. Hats off to the people who came up with this awesome recipe.

Building blocks of Moong Dal Halwa

Every ingredient in this Moong Dal Halwa Recipe is equally important and in my view if we skip any of these ingredients then it may be unfair to have this dish without it.

I have used sliced cashew, sliced almonds and also almonds powder to give it a nutty flavour. You can also add pistachios slices to give it a slight nice green colour combination. Cardamom Powder and Saffron strands are important to give nice aroma to this halwa recipe. Gram flour (besan) helps to bind the ingredients together and semolina (suji) contributes for nice granular texture (as I said earlier, all ingredients are equally important 😊).

Some people use milk and some people prepare Moong Dal Halwa without milk (by adding water instead of milk). But, I tried Moong Dal Halwa recipe with and without milk and after experiments, I prefer and love this recipe when it is prepared using milk.

This is a must try recipe, if you haven't tasted it yet. To check many more such food recipes, you may also visit FoodQuench’s YouTube Channel.

Cooking Method for Moong Dal Halwa Recipe
  1. Moong Dal Halwa

Wash moong dal 3 to 4 times and soak for 4 hours. After 4 hours, moong dal will almost double in size. Drain off all the water and transfer to mixer grinder.

Moong dal can also be soaked overnight if you are planning to prepare it next day.
  2. Now grind moong dal by adding little water (not too much) to it to form smooth puree.

  3. Moong Dal Halwa

Take a kadhai or any vessel, add milk and sugar to kadhai and allow it to boil on low flame.

Once milk is warm take out 2 tablespoons of milk and soak saffron strands in it.

Just keep few saffron strands for garnishing later and do not soak all of it.
  4. Moong Dal Halwa

Simultaneously on the other stove, heat a pan then add ghee to it, add almonds powder, split cashews, thin sliced almonds, semolina (suji) and gram flour (besan).

Just keep some cashews and almond slices for garnishing at the end.
  5. Moong Dal Halwa

Roast all ingredients for 3 to 4 minutes on a medium flame until they turn light golden in colour.

  6. Moong Dal Halwa

Now add moong dal puree to the pan and start stirring.

BE FOCUSSED and continue stirring because moong dal puree thickens very fast and then it gets difficult to separate it out.
  7. Moong Dal Halwa

Keep stirring continuously for about 20 minutes. After about 20 minutes mixture of moong dal separates out as you can see in the picture.

  8. Moong Dal Halwa

By this time milk is super hot. Now add milk, cardamom powder, saffron strands soaked milk and mix well.

  9. Moong Dal Halwa

Close the lid and simmer for around 5 minutes.
