This peanuts potatoes recipe is known as upawas batata bhaji in Marathi and known as farali sukhi bhaji in Gujarat.
In Maharashtra, this potatoes veggie recipe with peanuts (moongfali in hindi) is mostly prepared on fasting days. In case you aren't aware, Upawas or upavas means fasting, batata means potato and bhaji means vegetable / veggie. If you want a translated Hindi name for this recipe you may call it as Vrat wali Moongfali Aaloo ki Sabji.
There is a saying in Marathi, “Ekadashi Duppat Khashi” which means you eat twice than any other day (or you end up eating twice) on this Ekadashi day (an auspicious Day in Hindu Calendar) on which people do fasting. Some people may choose these fasting days to detox their body by not eating anything and some may end up eating twice than normal days.
Sometimes I think, on what basis these items were identified and allowed for fasting by our elders, what was the thought behind it? Was it to detox the body or eat something simple by making it tempting 😉.
Anyways, I don’t want to think too much because I like these fasting recipes. Especially sabudana khichdi and peanuts potato veggie.
This peanuts potato veggie is awesome and is mostly prepared for fasting days, but I think you can prepare anytime and you don’t have to wait for any fasting day to arrive for this amazing snacks. You may pack this in your lunch box for snacks time or you may have this peanuts potatoes with any roti or use as a stuffing for sandwich.
If you are looking to have this on fasting day, you may choose to serve this with Rajgira Roti or Puri or Singhara Roti. But, just having a bowl of this Moongfali wale Aaloo can keep you full for your rest of the day.
