Sweet Potato Roti Recipe is a sugar free recipe. But to give it a bit more sweetness I have used jaggery in this recipe. This Shakarkand ki roti (Shakarkand is Hindi word for Sweet Potato) is a healthy choice and is far better than having some chips or packaged snacks.

Sweet Potato Roti is perfect for breakfast or tea time snacks. We can even have these for lunch or dinner. You can also pack these sweet potato rotis for lunch box as well.

I love this sweet potato roti because it’s a healthy food and has packed with many health benefits. Sweet Potato contains good amount of fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals etc – all the good stuffs. Sweet potato contains lots of Vitamin A which is very good for our bones, skin and for eye sight (vision). Sweet potatoes also help to strengthen our immune system.

Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet. So, we don’t need a lot of sugar to make sweet potato rotis. We can just add small amount of Jaggery to make it a bit sweeter and tasty.

I have not used any food color because sweet potato is already nice orange in color and jaggery also contributes to give great color for this recipe and tastes good as well. Sweet Potatoes comes in different colors depending on the place you live. Sweet Potatoes skin color can be in white to yellow shades, red or purple.

I have microwaved sweet potatoes to make them soft. But, you can pressure cook or cook in steamer also until they turn soft.

We are not using water for preparing dough in this recipe. So these sweet potato rotis or shakarkand ki roti can last for few days upto 3 to 4 and more if you store in refrigerator. These Sweet Potatoes rotis can be packed to carry along with you during short trips if you want to avoid outside food.

  1. Wash Sweet Potatoes well.

  2. Prick (make hole) sweet potatoes with the help of a fork.

    This makes sure sweet potatoes won’t burst when baked in microwave.
  3. Wrap sweet potatoes in kitchen towels and place in microwave.

  4. Cook sweet potatoes in microwave for 5 minutes and then turn it over and cook for another 5 to 7 minutes.

    One batch of sweet potatoes would take 10 to 12 minutes. Place maximum 2 or 3 at a time. Because if you put all 5 at the same time, the sweet potatoes will take more time to become soft.
  5. Repeat the process for remaining batch of sweet potatoes.

  6. Peel off sweet potatoes once they become cool enough.

  7. Now heat kadhai, add jaggery to it. Allow jaggery to melt completely. Once jaggery is melted, add cardamom powder, nutmeg powder and mix well.

  8. Now add sweet potatoes to melted jaggery, mash sweet potatoes with the help of spoon and mix well.

  9. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until mixture thickens.

  10. Take wheat flour to large mixing bowl, add sweet potato mixture, mix well and knead dough.

  11. Apply some ghee and knead dough to make it smooth.

  12. Divide dough in equal portion.

  13. Take a dough ball, sprinkle some dry wheat flour and roll out to a medium thickness roti.

  14. Heat a tawa, place a roti on it. When cooked on one side turn over and apply some ghee. Similarly cook on other side too.

  15. Sweet Potato Roti is ready. Similarly cook all other rotis.

  16. Sweet Potato Rotis are great healthy choice to have at anytime. I served these Sweet Potato Rotis with spicy mango pickle. You can serve this Shakarkand ki Roti with any other pickle too.

    Pickle is most suitable one to serve with this sweet potato rotis other than any chutney, dips etc. You can additionally use some ghee while garnishing and it really tastes awesome.
